Getting involved with the CNMEU (Central New Mexico Employees Union) doesn’t require holding a formal leadership position (but it can!) there are plenty of ways to contribute based on your interests, time, and skills. Here are some common volunteer opportunities where members can make a real impact:
Committee Work
Committees are one of the easiest and most flexible ways to get involved. Depending on current needs, you might find opportunities in:
- Communications (newsletters, emails, social media, this website!)
- Organizing (member outreach and recruitment)
- Contract Action Teams (CAT) (supporting bargaining efforts)
- Events & Engagement (planning meetings, social events, or rallies)
- Committee on Political Education (political action and advocacy)
Member Outreach
Volunteers help connect with fellow employees by:
- Welcoming new hires and introducing them to the union
- Answering basic questions or directing members to resources
- Encouraging participation in meetings and votes
Bargaining Support
During contract negotiations, volunteers play a key role by:
- Gathering feedback from members about priorities
- Helping distribute updates and information
- Participating in visible support actions (like solidarity events)
Meeting & Event Support
You can assist with:
- Setting up and organizing union meetings
- Coordinating logistics for events or workshops
- Helping run sign-in tables or virtual meeting tools
Advocacy & Awareness
Help raise awareness about workplace issues by:
- Sharing union updates with colleagues
- Supporting campaigns for better pay or conditions
- Engaging in community or campus advocacy efforts
Running for a Role (When Ready)
If you’re interested in deeper involvement, volunteering can be a pathway to:
- Committee leadership roles
- Steward positions
- Executive Council candidacy
Final Thoughts
Volunteering with CNMEU is a great way to meet colleagues, stay informed, and contribute to positive change at CNM. Whether you have a few hours a semester or want to be deeply involved, there’s a place for you.
Even small contributions help build a stronger, more connected union.
