COPE stands for Committee on Political Education, and at CNMEU (Central New Mexico Employees Union), CNMEU COPE is the branch of the union focused on political action and advocacy.
What Does COPE Do?
CNMEU COPE works to support policies, legislation, and candidates that align with the interests of CNM employees and public education more broadly. While the union negotiates contracts and workplace conditions locally, COPE focuses on the bigger picture—decisions made at the state and local government level that affect funding, labor rights, and education policy.
This can include:
- Supporting pro-labor and pro-education candidates
- Advocating for increased funding for higher education
- Monitoring legislation that impacts CNM employees
- Encouraging members to stay informed and engaged in civic issues
How Is COPE Funded?
COPE is typically funded through voluntary contributions from union members. These funds are used for political activities such as campaign support, outreach, and advocacy efforts. Importantly, contributing to COPE is optional and separate from regular union dues.
Why COPE Matters
Many of the issues that affect CNM employees—like salaries, benefits, and job security—are influenced by decisions made outside the college itself. COPE helps ensure that employees have a voice in those broader decisions.
By organizing political action, CNMEU COPE connects workplace concerns to public policy, helping protect and strengthen the future of education and labor rights in New Mexico.
Final Thoughts
CNMEU COPE is about extending the union’s voice beyond the workplace and into the community and government. For members who want to engage in advocacy and make an impact at a larger scale, COPE offers a meaningful way to get involved.
